About Alan Durnwirth

I’m Alan Durnwirth, author of Silent Fuse: Living with the Undercurrent That Shaped My Life. I’m a husband, father of two sons, entrepreneur, and longtime West Seattle resident who loves photography and long walks.
I was born with a hidden neurological condition that shaped my experiences long before I understood what was happening. At twenty-four, I survived a brain hemorrhage and emergency brain surgery. What followed became a lifelong process of adapting, rebuilding, and gradually understanding how this condition had shaped my life.
Along the way, my wife and I raised our two sons. In 1995, I founded Precision Graphics & Design, a business I have operated for more than thirty years. Family, creative work, and the ongoing realities of living with a brain injury and epilepsy have all shaped the person I am today.
Since 2017, I have walked over 30,000 miles, many of them along Alki Beach and throughout Seattle. Walking gives me space to reflect, settle my mind, and pay attention. Together with years of journaling, those miles helped me find the words for Silent Fuse.
My memoir explores identity, family, recovery, and the parts of ourselves that others may never see. You don ’t need to have experienced a medical crisis to connect with its questions about belonging, change, and making sense of your own life.
Today, I write and speak about resilience, hidden neurological challenges, walking, and self-awareness. I share my experiences because I know how meaningful it can be to feel understood—and how much can change when we begin to understand ourselves.
My purpose is simple: to help people notice the life they’re already living.
